The Problem

Single-circuit tools weren’t built for large installations

Modern M&E design involves hundreds of circuits across multiple distribution boards, sub-mains and switchrooms. Tracking accumulated voltage drop, checking selectivity between devices and keeping board schedules up to date can't be done in a single-circuit tool or a spreadsheet.

Without CableSpec Pro
  • Accumulated VD tracked manually per sub-main - BS7671 App.4 §6.4 compliance impossible to demonstrate
  • Board schedules built by hand from individual calculation sheets - always out of date
  • No selectivity check - discrimination between upstream and downstream devices assessed informally if at all
  • Importing a 200-circuit design from a BIM or spreadsheet export means 200 manual circuit entries
  • No machine-readable output - BIM tools (Revit) can't consume cable sizing results
  • Distribution network structure lives only in the engineer's head - no audit trail
  • Single-circuit tools give no view of the full board hierarchy and how VD accumulates
  • Voltage drop checked in isolation per circuit - total VD from origin unknown
With CableSpec Pro
  • ΣVD tracked automatically from origin through sub-mains to final circuits per BS7671 App.4 §6.4
  • Board schedules generated automatically - hierarchical layout with sub-totals per board
  • Selectivity advisory per Reg 536.4 - energy and current checks between upstream and downstream devices
  • Excel template import of up to 500 circuits - parse, preview and calculate in one step
  • REST API with bearer token auth - Revit plugins and Power Automate flows consume results directly
  • Distribution network diagram - SVG single-line from origin to final circuits, auto-generated
  • Board hierarchy visible and navigable - boards, sub-boards, feeding relationships all stored and shown
  • Every calculation versioned and timestamped, with the calculating engineer and amendment recorded

How It Works

From supply origin to compliant distribution network

CableSpec Pro is structured around the distribution network as a whole - not just individual circuits. Define your boards, assign circuits, track accumulated VD and generate the full hierarchy of documentation a major project requires.

1

Set Up the Network

Create the project with supply parameters, then define distribution boards and their feeding relationships. Import circuits in bulk from an Excel template or add them individually - each assigned to a board and feeding sub-main.

2

Calculate & Check the Hierarchy

Run the BS7671 engine across all circuits, with upstream sub-main impedance carried into every downstream Zs and fault current. Review accumulated VD from origin through sub-mains to final circuits. Check selectivity between upstream and downstream devices. View the live network diagram.

3

Export the Full Package

Download hierarchical board schedules, per-circuit PDF certificates, the distribution network diagram and a full project report. Send results to Revit or downstream tools via the REST API.

Platform Features

Everything a professional cable sizing
workflow needs

Design Mode - Auto-Select

Enter Ib, device and run length and CableSpec works up through the available cable sizes to find the smallest that passes every check. If no size passes, it tells you which check is failing, the smallest size that meets capacity and voltage drop, and what would fix it — an RCD, a lower device rating or a bigger CPC.

Verify Mode

Already have a cable size specified? Enter it and Verify mode checks it against every BS7671 Appendix 4 check. Useful for design reviews, checking a size chosen for other reasons, and existing installations.

Scenario Comparison

Run alternative calculations on the same circuit with different cable types, installation methods or protective devices. Compare results side by side to find the most efficient or practical option.

Calculation Version History

Every calculation is saved as a numbered, timestamped version with its results, the engineer who ran it, the mode and the amendment. Reopen any earlier version to see how the design evolved — useful for CDM, design reviews and revisits.

Cable Route Manager

Define cable routes with one of 11 arrangements — bunched, enclosed, clipped, trays, ladder, buried direct or in ducts. CableSpec looks up the BS7671 grouping factor (Cg) for the number of circuits on the route, and flags every circuit on it for recalculation when the route changes.

Multi-Project Management

Organise work by project, each with its own supply parameters. Bulk recalculate all circuits in a project after changing Ze or earthing type. Project dashboard shows instant pass/fail/pending status at a glance.

Per-Circuit Calculation Certificate

Professional A4 PDF for each circuit: all inputs, every correction factor, each check result with its regulation reference, step-by-step VD and Zs working, prospective fault current, and an engineer declaration with name, date and your saved signature.

Project Schedule & Report

Print-ready A4 landscape circuit schedule showing all key results across the project. Full project PDF with a compliance summary, project details, engineer declaration and the circuit schedule. CSV export for external processing.

Secure Client Share Links

Share a read-only view of any project with clients, principal designers or reviewers. Links last 30 days, need no login on the receiving end, and can be revoked at any time from your project view.

Custom Report Branding

Upload your company or organisation logo. It appears automatically on certificates, reports, board schedules, network diagrams and client share pages, replacing the CableSpec wordmark with your own identity.

Amendment Version Tracking

Every result is stamped with the BS7671 amendment in force when the calculation was run. Circuits calculated under a previous amendment are flagged on the project view, certificate and share page.

Bulk Recalculate

Changed Ze or earthing system after preliminary design? One click re-runs the engine across all circuits in a project, preserving each circuit’s mode (design or verify) and showing a pass, partial and fail summary on completion.

Distribution Network Hierarchy PRO

Define distribution boards and their feeding relationships. Each circuit is assigned to a board and (optionally) fed by an upstream sub-main. The full network structure is stored, navigable and used for ΣVD tracking.

Accumulated Voltage Drop PRO

Tracks voltage drop from the supply origin through every sub-main to each final circuit per BS7671 Appendix 4 §6.4. Shows the full VD chain, own VD vs ΣVD, remaining budget and colour-coded pass/warn/fail status.

Hierarchical Board Schedule PRO

Printable A4 landscape board schedule organised by board hierarchy. Board headers with sub-totals, per-circuit own VD and ΣVD columns, feeding chain indicator, binding constraint column and CSV export.

Selectivity Advisory PRO

Energy (I²t) and current selectivity checks between each circuit’s device and the device feeding it, per Reg 536.4. Returns discriminates / partial / fails / unknown with engineering notes. Advisory only - does not affect pass/fail status.

Bulk Import from Excel PRO

Download the import template, fill in your circuit data (28 columns), upload and preview. Valid rows are inserted and calculated immediately. Board, feeding sub-main, device and conductor size can all be set from the sheet. Parse errors shown per row before commit.

Common questions answered

Everything you need to know before getting started with CableSpec Pro.

What BS7671 checks does CableSpec Pro perform?
Every circuit is checked to BS7671:2018+A4:2026 Appendix 4: (1) Current-carrying capacity — Ib ≤ In and Ib ≤ Iz (Reg 433.1.1); (2) Overload protection — In ≤ Iz, with In ≤ 0.725 Iz for BS 3036 fuses and In ≤ 0.9 Iz for buried cables (Regs 433.1.201–203), and Reg 433.1.204 for ring finals; (3) Voltage drop — Appendix 4 §6.4, with the reactive component for larger conductors; (4) Earth fault loop impedance — Zs ≤ Zs max for the required disconnection time (Reg 411.3.2, Table 41.1), plus Ra × IΔn ≤ 50V on TT systems; (5) Protective conductor — the adiabatic equation with the device’s I²t let-through, or selection to Table 54.7. The prospective fault current is also calculated and a warning raised if it exceeds the device’s breaking capacity. In addition, CableSpec Pro carries the impedance of upstream sub-mains into every downstream Zs and fault current, tracks voltage drop accumulated from the supply origin, and checks selectivity between each circuit and the device feeding it.
What is the difference between Design mode and Verify mode?
In Design mode, CableSpec Pro works up through the available sizes for the selected cable type and installation method, running every check at each size, and returns the smallest size that passes. If no size passes, it identifies the failing check and suggests remedies. In Verify mode, you enter a conductor size and CableSpec Pro checks it against every requirement — useful for design reviews, existing installations, or where a size has been chosen for reasons other than minimum compliance (mechanical protection, voltage drop headroom, future load growth). Conductor size can also be set in the import template and through the API.
How does accumulated voltage drop work in CableSpec Pro?
BS7671 Appendix 4 §6.4 applies the 3% (lighting) and 5% (other) limits from the origin of the installation, not just across the final circuit. For each circuit with an upstream sub-main, CableSpec Pro adds the circuit’s own voltage drop to the voltage drop of every sub-main feeding it to give the total (ΣVD) from the origin. The circuit result shows the full chain (for example Origin → Sub-main A → Final circuit) with the remaining budget, and the board schedule shows own VD and ΣVD side by side so you can see where the budget is being used.
What is the selectivity advisory and is it mandatory?
For each circuit fed from an upstream sub-main, CableSpec Pro checks selectivity between the two protective devices: (1) energy selectivity — the downstream device must clear the fault with a let-through I²t below the energy the upstream device needs to operate; and (2) current selectivity — the fault current the downstream device sees must stay below the upstream device’s instantaneous trip threshold. The result is discriminates, partial, fails or unknown (where manufacturer data isn’t held), with notes. It is advisory: Reg 536.4 requires selectivity to be considered where the design needs it, and the result does not change a circuit’s pass/fail status.
Which protective devices are in the database?
Manufacturer BS EN 60898 MCBs from Hager, Schneider Electric, ABB, Eaton and Legrand (curves B, C and D) and Wylex and Crabtree (curves B and C), with I²t let-through data for the protective conductor and selectivity checks. Generic devices cover MCBs, BS 88-2 gG fuses (6–200A), BS 1361 fuses, BS 3036 semi-enclosed fuses, MCCBs (125–800A) and legacy BS 3871 Type 1–4 MCBs. Maximum Zs values follow BS7671 Table 41.3 (Uo × Cmin / Ia). For RCBOs, select the MCB curve and rating and add the RCD details to the circuit.
How does the bulk Excel import work?
Three steps: (1) download the import template — a pre-formatted .xlsx covering every circuit field, with a Lookups tab listing the valid installation method and cable type codes from your live data; (2) fill it in and upload — every row is validated against the same rules as the circuit form and shown in a colour-coded preview (valid / warning / error) before anything is saved; (3) confirm — valid rows are inserted and calculated immediately. Board, feeding sub-main, device and conductor size can be set from the sheet (boards must already exist in the project). Rows with errors are skipped and listed. Up to 500 circuits can be imported in a single file.
Does CableSpec Pro support TT earthing systems?
Yes. TT projects use 0.2s disconnection for final circuits up to 32A (or up to 63A supplying socket-outlets) and 1s otherwise. Where an RCD is fitted, the maximum Zs is 50V / IΔn (Table 41.5) and Ra × IΔn ≤ 50V is checked (Reg 411.5.3) using the earth electrode resistance entered on the project — without Ra the Zs check fails until it is added. Without an RCD, CableSpec Pro warns that fault protection relies on the overcurrent device, which is rarely achievable on TT.
